Fit the cubic

These points come from a cubic curve with some random measurement noise added. Adjust the four coefficients of ŷ = ax³ + bx² + cx + d to make the RMSE as small as you can.

Your curve

your RMSE
far offwithin 15%

Tips
  • d moves the whole curve up and down. It is the height where the curve crosses x = 0.
  • a controls the ends. Positive a rises to the right, negative a falls. A bigger size makes the ends steeper.
  • b and c bend and tilt the middle. Change one slider at a time and keep it moving in whichever direction lowers the RMSE.
  • Turn on residuals to see where the curve misses most.

RMSE = √(sum of squared residuals ÷ (n − 4)), since four coefficients are fitted.
